Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is one of the most difficult stages of acquisition for many language learners. One of the reasons is learners find many unfamiliar words while reading texts. This is especially true for Indonesian Junior High School Students who have a limited access to use English in daily communication. This study aims to investigate the students’ vocabulary learning strategy (VLS) and its relationship with reading ability of 58 Indonesian junior high school students who are in their last year of school. It used two instruments: a test given to measure students ability in reading and a VLS questionnaire to get the vocabulary learning strategy used by the students. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS 25.0 program. The One-way ANOVA was used for analyzing the data. Finally, the study found no relationship between low-moderate-high vocabulary learning strategy and students’ reading ability. It is suggested for measuring the students’ vocabulary size and also the relation with another skills of English.
