Abstract

This study examines the meaning of syajarah ṭayyibah in Q.S. Ibrahim: 24-25 using Roland Barthes' semiotics to fill the gap in studies that tend to interpret the verse normatively-theologically without systematically dissecting the structure of its symbolic meaning. Barthes' approach was chosen because it is able to reveal layers of meaning in the Qur'an not only at the descriptive level (denotation), but also at the ideological level (myth) that plays a role in the formation and internalization of values. This study uses a qualitative method based on text analysis with stages of linguistic study, interpretative context, and semiotic reading through denotative, connotative, and mythological levels. The results of the study show that at the denotative level, syajarah ṭayyibah represents a tree with certain physical characteristics, while at the connotative level it builds associations of faith, charity, and social benefits. Meanwhile, at the mythological level, the tree metaphor functions as a system of meaning that normalizes the concept of ideal character in Islam as a process of values that are rooted, growing, and sustainable. This finding confirms that the Qur'anic metaphor is not only illustrative, but also functions as a symbolic device that conveys character values conceptually, thus providing a theoretical contribution to the study of Qur'anic semiotics and discourse on character development based on Qur'anic values.
