This study examines the meaning of syajarah ṭayyibah in Q.S. Ibrahim: 24-25 using Roland Barthes' semiotics to fill the gap in studies that tend to interpret the verse normatively-theologically without systematically dissecting the structure of its symbolic meaning. Barthes' approach was chosen because it is able to reveal layers of meaning in the Qur'an not only at the descriptive level (denotation), but also at the ideological level (myth) that plays a role in the formation and internalization of values. This study uses a qualitative method based on text analysis with stages of linguistic study, interpretative context, and semiotic reading through denotative, connotative, and mythological levels. The results of the study show that at the denotative level, syajarah ṭayyibah represents a tree with certain physical characteristics, while at the connotative level it builds associations of faith, charity, and social benefits. Meanwhile, at the mythological level, the tree metaphor functions as a system of meaning that normalizes the concept of ideal character in Islam as a process of values that are rooted, growing, and sustainable. This finding confirms that the Qur'anic metaphor is not only illustrative, but also functions as a symbolic device that conveys character values conceptually, thus providing a theoretical contribution to the study of Qur'anic semiotics and discourse on character development based on Qur'anic values.
Miftahul Jannah

https://journal.iaimnumetrolampung.ac.id/index.php/qij/article/view/7105

This study examines historiographical perspectives on the early emergence of Shīʿism in Islamic history using a historical-critical approach and a library-based research method. Drawing on primary and secondary sources, particularly the works of Ḥusain al-Dhahabī such as Tafsīr wa al-Mufassirūn, it traces the chronology, intellectual genealogy, and formation of Shīʿī identity and terminology in the early Islamic period. The study emphasizes al-Dhahabī’s position as both a historian and a Sunnī ḥadīth scholar who integrates isnād criticism, biographical evaluation, and theological judgment in his reading of history, resulting in an approach to Shīʿism that is not merely descriptive but also shaped by Sunnī doctrinal frameworks. Methodologically, the study seeks to balance objective historical description with normative evaluation by presenting data through rigorous source verification and socio-political contextual analysis, while theological principles function as ethical boundaries. From a historiographical standpoint, the study records differing views on the origins of Shīʿism, ranging from the period immediately after the death of the Prophet Muḥammad to the late caliphate of ʿUthmān and the early rule of ʿAlī, with most scholars identifying the arbitration following the Battle of Ṣiffīn as a decisive turning point that accelerated political and theological polarization. In addition, the study reviews Qurʾānic interpretation among major Shīʿī sects, such as the Zaydiyyah, Ithnā ʿAshariyyah, and Rāfiḍah, and underscores the need for methodological caution, rigorous source criticism, and awareness of theological implications in the study of Islamic sectarian history to preserve academic objectivity.
Ro'is Mas'udi

https://journal.iaimnumetrolampung.ac.id/index.php/qij/article/view/7218

The term makar is one of the Qur’anic concepts that has undergone significant semantic expansion and transformation as it intersects with modern social, political, and legal contexts. This article examines makar in the Qur’an through a thematic tafsīr approach by identifying Qur’anic verses containing the term and comparing interpretations from classical, medieval, and contemporary exegetes. The study employs verse inventory, cross-period tafsīr analysis, and contextual reading to explore the relationship between the meaning of makar and shifting configurations of power. Theoretically, this article contributes to thematic Qur’anic exegesis by conceptualizing makar as a relational and dynamic category that mediates between textual meaning and changing regimes of power, thereby bridging Qur’anic studies with critical analyses of religion and authority. The findings demonstrate that makar in the Qur’an is not a static concept but one that moves from visible physical actions to symbolic and discursive strategies; from personal conflicts between prophets and rulers to structural relations between elites and society; and from specific historical events to broader ethical reflection. The article further argues that attributing makar to God functions as an expression of divine justice that constrains and overturns human ambitions for domination, rather than legitimizing manipulative practices. Consequently, a Qur’anic reading of makar provides a more cautious and reflective conceptual framework for understanding the tensions between religion, law, and power in contemporary Muslim societies.
Ahmad Tohir

https://journal.iaimnumetrolampung.ac.id/index.php/qij/article/view/7213

This study examines the Qur’anic interpretive method based on tartīb al-nuzūl developed by Muḥammad ‘Izzat Darwazah in his work al-Tafsīr al-Ḥadīth. Departing from classical exegetical traditions that adhere to the canonical arrangement of the muṣḥaf, Darwazah structures his interpretation chronologically according to the order of revelation in order to trace the historical development of Qur’anic themes, legal principles, and the prophetic strategies of the Prophet Muḥammad. This research employs a qualitative library-based method with a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing on Darwazah’s tafsir, works on Qur’anic hermeneutics and tafsir methodology, and relevant contemporary studies. The findings demonstrate that the nuzūlī method offers a significant contribution to Qur’anic understanding, particularly in elucidating the gradual nature of Islamic legislation, situating verses within their sociohistorical context, and applying a critical stance toward weak narrations and Isrā’īliyyāt. Moreover, Darwazah rejects the doctrines of abrogation (naskh) and scientific exegesis, while emphasizing the universality of Qur’anic wording in conveying its message. Academically, this study positions Darwazah’s nuzūlī approach as an alternative paradigm within modern tafsir methodology debates, bridging historical consciousness and thematic coherence in Qur’anic interpretation. The study concludes that Darwazah’s approach provides a historical, thematic, and relatively objective framework that remains relevant for the development of contemporary Qur’anic studies.
Siti Qoti'ah

https://journal.iaimnumetrolampung.ac.id/index.php/qij/article/view/7096

This article examines the application of logical positivism, specifically Alfred Jules Ayer’s verification principle, to QS. al-Aʿrāf [7]: 31 in constructing the concept of a healthy lifestyle. Employing a qualitative method with a library research approach, the study is grounded in the philosophy of language, which views linguistic expressions, sentences, symbols, and signs, as bearers of meaning that can be theoretically disclosed through interpretation. As a prominent figure of logical positivism, Ayer formulated the verification principle to assess the meaningfulness and truth of propositions through empirical validation. In this study, the verification principle is not directed at testing the truth of Qur’anic revelation per se, but at analyzing the extent to which the practical implementation of the verse can be empirically correlated with findings in health sciences. According to Ayer, a statement is meaningful insofar as it is verifiable through experience. The findings indicate that many contemporary diseases are closely associated with dietary habits, particularly excessive food consumption. This observation is in line with QS. al-Aʿrāf [7]: 31, which cautions against excess in eating and drinking. Medical research further supports this principle, demonstrating that overeating significantly increases the risk of serious diseases later in life. Accordingly, this study concludes that QS. al-Aʿrāf [7]: 31 is strongly verifiable, as its normative guidance exhibits a clear empirical correspondence with established health expertise.
Mar’atun Nabila

https://journal.iaimnumetrolampung.ac.id/index.php/qij/article/view/7183

This article examines the Qur’anic interpretive methodology of the Khawārij by positioning al-Dhahabi’s critique as an analytical and evaluative framework. While existing studies have largely approached the Khawārij as a theological and political movement in early Islam, their approach to Qur’anic interpretation has rarely been examined as a distinct methodological and epistemological issue. This study seeks to address this gap by analyzing how Khawārij exegetical principles were constructed and assessed within the tradition of Sunni tafsir criticism, particularly as articulated in al-Dhahabi’s al-Tafsīr wa al-Mufassirūn. Employing a qualitative library-based method with a historical-analytical approach, this article traces the historical context of Khawārij thought, identifies both explicit and implicit principles underlying their exegetical practices, and examines al-Dhahabi’s criteria for evaluating interpretive legitimacy. The findings indicate that Khawārij exegesis is characterized by strong textual literalism, selective citation of Qur’anic verses, limited engagement with historical context, and a restrictive use of the Prophetic Sunnah, reflecting the dominance of prior theological commitments over interpretive openness. This study argues that the core problem lies not in the Qur’anic text itself, but at the level of interpretive methodology, thus offering a methodological contribution to broader discussions on Qur’anic interpretation, interpretive authority, and the risks of ideological absolutism in religious exegesis.
Muhammad Rasyidin
